HOPERAPERTA
TOTEM e TABÙ. WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
On the occasion of Milano Design City - an event created by the municipality of Milan that engages the foremost design institutions and districts to promote the city as an international hub for design culture – HoperAperta presentsTotem e Tabù ovvero il Mondo Capovolto in the exposition halls of the Wannenes Auction House in Palazzo Recalcati. Totem e Tabù is a collection of unique pieces and installations that revisit and reinterpret the relationship between totemic figures and aesthetic taboos in the contemporary world, and between everyday objects and the poetic imagery of art.
On view, the art/design of Angela Ardisson (designer), Maurizio Barberis (artist), Alfonso Femia / AF* Design (architect), Dario Ghibaudo(artist), Duccio Grassi (architect), Steve Piccolo (sound artist), Davide Valoppi / Studio Noarc (architect), and Alberto Vannetti (artista).
HoperAperta is a cultural platform shared by artists, actors, architects, designers, and curators who come together to share their talents in art, design, and fine craftsmanship. For its 2020 edition the eight participating artists will present the theme of Totem e Tabù, totems and taboos, each offering a unique narrative and a distinct perspective on the subject.
The projects will be produced in partnership with Italian firms which specialize in the crafting of wood, stone, marble, brass, and other metals - CL Livio Colombo, Cromonichel, Julia Marmi, Marmi Faedo. They will help bring these pieces to life, enriching a virtual catalog of art and design that tells the story of HoperAperta.
Angela Ardisson presents the light sculpture Kepler, a perfect sphere which takes its name from the NASA telescope; Maurizio Barberis creates a work of art intended to hold art, the Studiolo collector's cabinet. Alfonso Femia's contribution is Mappa Stellare, inspired by the Nebra Sky Disk, the earliest known star map, while Dario Ghibaudo brings three pieces from his Museo di Storia Innaturale. Duccio Grassi presents Trittico, a modular and extendable furniture set, Davide Valloppi submits La Pirogue, a table/sculpture with an anthropomorphic lamp, while Alberto Vannetti addresses the myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece with Utopie e Gloria, il Vello d’Oro.
Sound designer Steve Piccolo, active as an artist and musician since 1990, will also present a site specific audiovisual performance.
HoperAperta has felt the need to broaden it's horizons and is including a series of videos– including one created ad hoc by Steve Piccolo – that could constitute the premise for HoperAperta 2021, engaging Álvaro Catalán De Ocón, Mariano Martín,LOT-EK and Tom Piper. These authors are from Madrid and New York, two cities that, much like Milan, thrum with artistic activity but have been gravely affected by the pandemic.
The participating artists will give a series of presentations throughout the week.
